EL CAC MÁLAGA PRESENTA LA EXPOSICIÓN MÁS IMPORTANTE EN ESPAÑA DE MARCEL DZAMA
El Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga presenta Con razón o sin ella/With or Without Reason del artista canadiense Marcel Dzama. La exposición comisariada por Fernando Francés es la más importante hasta la fecha del artista en nuestro país, ya que se han reunido cincuenta piezas que repasan el trabajo más reciente de Dzama. Además, en el CAC Málaga se van a poder ver obras inéditas y un diorama que se compone de más de trescientas figuras de cerámica, la obra más grande que ha realizado nunca. Sus conocidos dibujos, dioramas de papel, collages, pinturas, esculturas y su último vídeo completan la exposición.

“Me gusta cuando todo se conjuga para crear algo misterioso y mitológico” cita textualmente Marcel Dzama (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canadá, 1974). El artista crea un mundo fantástico a partir de figuras que recrean un espacio más cerca de algo soñado que de la propia realidad. Con elementos reconocibles, en sus dibujos plantea ambientes cargados de símbolos que hacen referencia a la violencia y a la guerra, bien sea por el uniforme militar que visten sus figuras, o por coreografías cuyos bailarines portan armas. La paleta de colores apagados sobre fondo de papel en blanco pasa por el rojo, marrón, verde, caqui, gris y negro. Dzama interpreta y reinterpreta personajes infantiles, vuelca sus miedos y pesadillas en sus obras.
Para Fernando Francés, director del CAC Málaga: “En la imaginación de este artista canadiense tienen cabida desde murciélagos albinos que sobrevuelan un campo de tiro, en el que las figuras forman una coreografía perfecta que están apuntando al cielo, un espacio en el que además de murciélagos, se pueden ver caballos, ciervos o patos (‘On the banks of the red river’, 2008). O bien, un dibujo que representa un danza macabra, con una bailarina que marca el compás de la escena, donde los elementos del espectáculo se alternan con personajes disfrazados con trajes de lunares junto a otros esperando para ser ejecutados. Las referencias a la muerte y a la violencia no faltan en este dibujo, donde uno de los personajes porta un sable y donde se pueden ver armas esperando a ser disparadas (‘Which Means as Much as Nothin’, 2011).
Entre las piezas que componen la exposición están las esculturas de cerámicas realizadas en Guadalajara (México), ciudad a la que está muy unido el artista y en las que pasa largas temporadas trabajando. Estas cabezas de cerámicas y hojalata son obras inéditas que verán la luz por primera vez en Málaga. En cuanto al vídeo A Game of Chess (2011), los personajes que aparecen se reconocen en otras de sus obras. El vestuario y la coreografía también los ha diseñado el propio artista. El ajedrez deja de ser un simple juego para convertirse en una historia en la que todos los personajes van muriendo poco a poco. El propio artista ha declarado en más de una ocasión que estar continuamente escuchando noticias sobre guerras, violencia y muerte acaba influyendo en su obra.
Otra de las piezas clave de esta exposición es el diorama ‘On the Banks of the red river’ (2008), que fue el primero que realizó y que marcó un punto de inflexión en su trayectoria. Con más de trescientas figuras, está realizado de madera, esculturas de cerámica y metal. El diorama recoge las versiones en cerámica de personajes anteriormente representados en sus dibujos y collages.
La influencia del dadaísmo está presente en su trabajo a través de la danza, con referencias a Duchamp y al Ballet Triádico de Oskar Schelemmer. Entre los clásicos, Goya es otro de los referentes para Dzama, hasta tal punto que para el título de la exposición (Con razón o sin ella/With or Without Reason) está inspirado en el trabajo del pintor español y cómo interpretaba que es la ausencia de razón la que lleva al ser humano a la guerra. Tampoco es casualidad que el artista recurra al español para titular o incluir frases en sus collages, ya que conoce la poesía de Lorca y ha leído textos del mexicano Juan Rulfo.
Marcel Dzama es un artista multidisciplinar. Su trabajo ha ilustrado portadas de discos, como Guero de Beck o Reconstruction Site de The Weakerthans y The Else por They Might Be Giants, entre otros. También ha formado parte de vídeos musicales como “When the Deal Goes Down” de Bob Dylan o “No One Does It Like You” de Departament of Eagles, vídeo que también codirigió y “The People Tree” de N.A.S.A.
Junto a otros artistas locales, entre los que se encontraban miembros de su propia familia, fundó The Royal Art Lodge. Se trata de un colectivo que se reunía los miércoles por la noche para producir dibujos, marionetas, dioramas, cómics, collages o muñecas de trapo, con la particularidad de que cada artista empieza trabajando sobre una pieza y se la pasa a otro artista para que la vaya completando, y así sucesivamente hasta que alguien decide que la obra está acabada. The Royal Art Lodge dio sus frutos y sus trabajos se han podido ver expuestos en galerías y museos de todo el mundo.
Marcel Dzama nació en Canadá en 1974, donde también llevó a cabo sus estudios universitarios. Actualmente, vive y trabaja en Brooklyn. Entre sus exposiciones individuales más recientes destacan las de 2011 en el el Gemeentemuseum, en Holanda y la de Kunstverein Braunschweig en Alemania. En 2010, tuvo lugar la mayor exposición individual hasta el momento del artista en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Montreal en Canadá. Otras exposiciones importantes son las de la Pinacoteca de Arte Moderno en Múnich (2008), la de la Ikon Gallery en Birminngham en Inglaterra (2006) y la de Le Magasin, en el Centro Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Grenoble en Francia (2005).
El trabajo de Dzama también forma parte de las colecciones permanentes de galerías y museos de todo el mundo, como las de la Galería de Arte Corcoran en Washington, el Museo de Arte de Dallas, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Montreal, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Los Ángeles, el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, el museo Solomon R. Guggenheim de Nueva York, el Tate de Londres y la Gallería de Arte de Vancouver.
En la pasada edición de ARCO Madrid, el artista canadiense recibió el premio de la comunidad por el diorama Rebellion lay in her way (2011), obra que forma parte de la exposición del CAC Málaga.

THE CAC MÁLAGA PRESENTS THE MOST IMPORTANT EXHIBITION ON MARCEL DZAMA HELD TO DATE IN SPAIN
The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga is presenting Con razón o sin ella/With or Without Reason by the Canadian artist Marcel Dzama. Curated by Fernando Francés, this is the most important exhibition to date on this artist in Spain given that it features fifty of his most recent works. In addition, the CAC Málaga will be showing previously unexhibited works and a diorama of more than 300 ceramic figures, which is Dzama’s largest work to date. His well-known drawings, paper dioramas, collages, paintings, sculptures and his latest video complete the display.

“I like it when everything comes together to create something mysterious and mythological”, in the words of Marcel Dzama (born Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, 1974). Dzama’s work involves the invention of a fantastical world through figures that people a setting closer to dreams than to reality. Using recognisable elements, his drawings evoke contexts filled with symbols of war and violence, either through the characters’ military uniforms or through choreographies in which the dancers carry weapons. The muted chromatic range against the white of the paper ranges from red to brown, green, khaki, grey and black. Dzama interprets and reinterprets characters from the world of childhood, expressing his fears and nightmares in his work.
For Fernando Francés, Director of the CAC Málaga: “In the imagination of this Canadian artist there is room for albino bats flying over a shooting range while the figures form a perfectly choreographed group in order to shoot at a sky that includes not just bats but also horses, deer and ducks (On the banks of the red river, 2008). We also encounter a drawing that represents a danse macabre with a ballerina setting the beat for the scene and in which the elements in the performance are juxtaposed with characters wearing polka-dot dresses and other waiting to be executed. References to death and violence are certainly to be found in this drawing in which one of the figures has a sword and there are weapons about to be fired (Which Means as Much as Nothin’, 2011)”.
Among the works in the exhibition are the ceramic sculptures that Marcel Dzama produced in Guadalajara (Mexico), a city with which he has close connections and where he has spent lengthy periods working. These previously unexhibited tin and ceramic heads will be shown in Malaga for the first time. With regard to the video A Game of Chess (2011), the characters that appear in it can be seen in other works in this exhibition. In this short film chess ceases to be a mere game and becomes a narrative in which the characters are gradually killed off. As the artist has noted on various occasions, constantly listening to news about war, violence and death has influenced his work.
Another key piece in the present exhibition is the diorama On the banks of the red river (2008), the first work of this type that Dzama produced and one that marked a turning point in his creative output. Made of wood, ceramic sculptures and metal, it includes 300 figures that are ceramic versions of characters already seen in the artist’s drawings and collages.
The influence of Dada is present in Marcel Dzama’s work through dance, with references to Duchamp and to Oskar Schlemmer’s Triadic Ballet. Among the great artists of the past, Goya is an ongoing reference point to the extent that the present exhibition’s title, Con razón o sin ella/With or Without Reason, derives from that artist’s work and from his conviction that the absence of reason leads mankind to commit acts of violence. Again, the use of Spanish for some of Dzama’s titles and for phrases in his collages is not fortuitous given that he is familiar with Lorca’s poetry and with the work of the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo.
Marcel Dzama is a multi-disciplinary artist. He has illustrated cd covers such as Guero by Beck, Reconstruction Site by The Weakerthans and The Else by They Might be Giants and has also been involved in musical videos such as When the Deal Goes Down by Bob Dylan, No one does it like You by Department of Eagles, which he also co-directed, and The People Tree by N.A.S.A.
Marcel Dzama was a founder member of The Royal Art Lodge together with other local artists including members of his own family. This was a collective project in which the participants met on Wednesday evenings to produce drawings, puppets, dioramas, comics, collages and rag dolls. Its distinctive method involved each artist starting a work than passing it to another for further work until one member decided that it was finished. The Royal Art Lodge gained critical recognition and its creations have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
Currently resident in Brooklyn, New York, Marcel Dzama was born in Canada in 1974 where he completed his university studies. Among his most recent solo exhibitions were those held in 2011 at the Gemeentemuseum in Holland and at the Kunstverein in Brunswick, Germany. In 2010 the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal, Canada, held the largest exhibition of his work to date. Other important exhibitions have been held at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich (2008), the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK (2006), and Le Magasin of the Centre national d’art contemporain in Grenoble, France (2005).
Dzama’s work is also represented in the permanent collections of galleries and museums throughout the world including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Tate Modern, London, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
At this year’s ARCO fair in Madrid Dzama was awarded the Regional Government of Madrid’s prize for his diorama Rebellion lay in her way (2011), a work to be seen in the present exhibition.
